How to store cigars: humidity and temperature
Premium cigars are best kept in a stable, humidified environment. These are general guidelines widely used in the trade.
The short answer
Store cigars in a humidor at about 65–70% relative humidity (RH) and about 16–20°C. Keep both as stable as possible: steady conditions matter more than hitting an exact number.
Why humidity matters
Cigars are made of natural leaf. If the air is too dry they lose oils and flavour, burn hot and can crack. If it is too humid they can become soft, burn unevenly and are more exposed to mould.
Choosing a humidor
- A tight seal that closes evenly, so humidity stays inside.
- Cedar (often Spanish cedar) lining, commonly used because it helps hold moisture and suits cigars.
- A humidifier element suitable for the size of the box and a hygrometer you trust.
Setting up and maintaining
- Season a new humidor before filling it, following the maker’s instructions.
- Use distilled water or the humidification solution recommended for your humidifier.
- Check the hygrometer regularly. Digital and analogue hygrometers drift, so calibrate them from time to time, for example with the common salt test, which should read about 75% RH.
- Leave some air space and avoid overfilling, so air can circulate.
Where to place it
Keep the humidor away from direct sunlight, heaters, air-conditioning outlets and strong odours. Avoid large temperature swings.
Common mistakes
- Storing cigars in a fridge or in a plain airtight container without humidification.
- Letting temperature rise for long periods: warm, humid conditions can encourage tobacco beetle.
- Wetting cigars directly.
