Supplying cigars to duty free and travel retail

A practical overview of what a duty free or travel retail operator should expect from a cigar supplier.

By NWU Trading Ltd. ·

Overview

Travellers expect a premium cigar offer that is well chosen, well kept and well presented. Supplying travel retail therefore involves more than delivery: it covers range, availability, condition and paperwork.

1. Assortment planning

A good assortment reflects the location, the customer mix and the space available. It usually combines recognised premium names with a range of sizes and strengths, and is reviewed as sales data comes in.

2. Stock continuity

Core lines should stay available. Replenishment is best planned with the supplier in advance, and reviewed around seasonal peaks.

3. Storage and condition

Cigars should be held and delivered under controlled humidity and temperature, and displayed in suitable humidors or cabinets. See our storage guide.

4. Documentation

Operators typically need commercial invoices and product details, and may need licences or other documents depending on the airport, port or jurisdiction. Labelling and health-warning requirements also vary by market. Confirm current requirements with the operator and the competent authority.

5. Merchandising and training

Presentation support and product knowledge sessions for sales staff help travellers choose with confidence.
